Is there a way to disable the "Microsoft Exchange" on behalf of <<sender name>> security feature in Exchange 2007?
We have a custom application that archives messages using the Outlook API, it was developed using Exchange 2003 when Journal messages had the actual sender name. Now that we have upgraded to Exchange 2007 all Jornal message sender names are set to "Microsoft Exchange" in the API properties. When we are searching the archive the sender field is a common search parameter. I've been looking for Journal rules and am not seeing any - I'm wondering if this is a default setting and I can add a rule to disable the security feature in the EMS. I am not an Exchange guru and we only have basic skills in house.I saw this in a technet article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2006.12.journaling.aspx?pr=blogPossibly add this rule and set it to false?Set-Mailbox <Journal Mailbox Name>-AcceptMessagesOnlyFrom "Microsoft Exchange" -RequireSenderAuthenticationEnabled $TrueWill appreciate any info...

are you using Exchange 2007 journal and the messages are stored using a third application or the third application makes all the process..it looks like that you use an account for the journal application, so maybe what you will need is impersonate those journaling mailboxes to the account that is performing the journalingCapecolMCSA - MCTS Exchange Server 2007 - 2010

My customer is using Microsoft Exchange 2007 and has set the Mailbox to Journal to a particular mailbox (journal) and the scope is set to Global. All mail sent and received on this Exchange serveris sent to the Journal mailbox. Our Archiving application accesses the message properties using the Outlook API and since the 2007 upgrade all of the sender have become "Microsoft Exchange" on behalf of. I've been doing more research and the Exchange 2007 creates a wrapper message for the original email (which is added as an attachment to the wrapper message). So it is looking like turning the feature off may not be possible. The original sender is captured in the extended journal fields as "on behalf of" but I haven't found any way to access that data. Our application works as designed accessing the jornal mailbox - it's just a pain that all of the sender names are now "Microsoft Exchange" and we will need to mine it from the message or the attachment (sender is a field regularly searched on). Our system used the Redemption library to access the Outlook API.Thanks for the response,Mike

Yes you are right, this behavior is by design...Microsoft states that if the message goes to a different mailbox the original copy of the message changes, so the message has change since the original recipient is not the final destination, so the solution was to envelope the message as an attachment to keep the original copy that was sent...thats the reason why the sender appears as "Microsoft Exchange".. We implemented this solution on a large company for some hundred of users, we just configure the Journal mailbox on an Outlook 2007 with Windows Search 4.0 to take advantage of the WDS benefits (The auditors has the necessary permission over the journal mailbox, so they can make a lot searches by differents options like sender, recipients subjects, specific words, attachments etc).. this solution fits great at the customer.CapecolMCSA - MCTS Exchange Server 2007 - 2010
